Thought you could bring us down, but we rise again!!
Queer Movie Classics is BACK, and has found a new home with The People's Center!! Well, not a physical one, more like a residency....
This Pride month, we are promoting SELF-LOVE and returning to our high school years. In correlation with the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, we'll be holding space for our younger selves as we showcase the 2018 queer coming-of-age film, LOVE, SIMON starring NICK ROBINSON, JOSH DUHMAEL, JENNIFER GARNER and KEIYNAN LONSDALE!!
Simon (played by Robinson) is like most teens of this day and age; he has a loving and eccentric family, great friends, and a difficult time navigating life in the status quo of high school. He is also harboring a secret from everyone: Simon is gay and doesn't want anyone to know. He finds out from his friend Abby that a student in school came out online under a fake name and posts about their own struggles with coming out of the closet. This compels Simon to create his own pseudonym to respond back & open up as well, which starts a friendship & romantic feelings.
Then one day he makes the mistake of leaving his emails open at the school library (BIG MISTAKE) and his classmate Martin finds it. Martin decides to blackmail Simon into helping him get together with Simon's friend Abby, or else he will reveal to the entire school his online persona! This put Simon in a rough spot: he knows somewhat his family would accept him, heck, his mom is a therapist (played by Garner) and his dad (played by Duhmael)...well, we could do without the fruity jokes, as would his friends. But seeing how the only openly gay kid in school is treated, it's understandable why he doesn't want to come out, especially to be outed. Plus, he knows Blue isn't out at school either, and he doesn't want them to get hurt, because he has fallen for them. What can he do? Straight people don't have to deal with this.
Join us on JUNE 28th at the Racine Public Library to view the film and discuss its different adaptations, its message of self-acceptance & openly discuss our coming out stories: the good, bad & ugly. We will be holding space for our younger selves this Pride month, because EVERYONE deserves a love story.
